Bosch Studio - Class of 1947

I remember going for my class picture at Bosch Studio on Hamilton Street. It was a very formal event - we sat straight on the stool in a few different poses. We couldn't wait to get those pictures back to exchange the wallet sized ones with our friends and of course both Grandma Brandi and Grandma Shea needed a 5x7 and Mom wanted the 8x10.

Flash forward to my daughters' picture days. There was nothing formal about it. I can truthfully say that both those days were favorite memories. They each had four outfits to change into - 45 photos were taken inside and outside. By a barn door, sitting on a rock, all dressed up standing by a column.

Flash forward to grandchildren - they now get everything on a CD - lots of pictures to choose from - they can print off any extras they want.

Even though the technology has changed - the way you feel that you have "come of age" that graduation is just around the corner. That you really are going out into the world. It is a rite of passage. One that is time honored and appreciated by all.

Strangers in the Box

Tom Kennedy wanted to know where to send some pictures - I told him to ME of course, I would love to add more to the blog. I am still looking for the Yearbooks listed on the left side of the blog - I would love to have every year represented. Then today Tom sent the website to this poem and I thought it was lovely, too.

Strangers in the Box
Come, look with me inside this drawer,
In this box I've often seen,
At the pictures, black and white,
Faces proud, still, serene.

I wish I knew the people,
These strangers in the box,
Their names and all their memories
Are lost among my socks.

I wonder what their lives were like.
How did they spend their days?
What about their special times?
I'll never know their ways.

If only someone had taken time
To tell who, what, where, when,
These faces of my heritage
Would come to life again.

Could this become the fate
Of the pictures we take today?
The faces and the memories
Someday to be tossed away?

Make time to save your pictures,
Seize the opportunity when it knocks,
Or someday you and yours could be
The strangers in the box.

In 1997, I authored the poem titled, "Strangers in the Box." At the
time I was teaching scrapbooking classes, and used the poem in my
presentations. I have found it in so many places, printed as "author
unknown," but I am trying to correct this and ask that you credit me.

I originally wrote the poem when my mother had dementia, and I realized
that the stories she loved to tell me about her youth and her family
were locked inside her, and I didn't remember them like I was so sure I
always would. Hence, the box of strangers. I have few stories of
family before my grandparents--I need to do some genealogy hunting for
myself!

Calling All Volunteers

Both of the All Class Reunions were smashing successes! Everyone had a great time and it was so great to see so many friends again. It would be a good idea to get new people involved in planning the next one. Most of the work is in the year that the reunion will be held. The present committee feels it shouldn't be every FIVE years - so the next one will probably be in four or six years.

If your class will be having a reunion - why not make it the ALL CLASS REUNION? Or if your class isn't having a reunion one of those years - and you have that St. Mary Cathedral High School Class Spirit and you feel the urge to volunteer. Or if you just had a great time and want to help out with the next one......

America the Beautiful

I received an email from Marc Melvin - class of 1973 - he sent a picture of a clipping from the school newspaper in either 1969 or 1970 when Jim Schaeffer and he were freshmen. It was a project we did for Mr. Kraemer's Civics class.

In 1948 the inside and back cover of the labarum had this picture taken on the steps of St. Mary Cathedral. I assume it is the girls choir.

Note From The Oldest Known Classmate - 1923

This was a note from the oldest known classmate of 1923 - Flora M. Ewald. She sent her best wishes for the reunion - it was read to everyone in attendance. I sent her a note thanking her and telling her we all sent our best wishes back to her.

The Reunion

The reunion was held at Horizons Conference Center in Saginaw. The banquet center was a beautiful facility and the room was set for 865 people. Everything went so smoothly and it was an exciting fun evening.

Jim Storey and Jim Shea headed the program and Bishop Carlson was the guest speaker.

There were several interesting items:

We had reservations for 864 people (graduates, spouses, teachers, clergy, etc) and 576 of them were graduates of St. Mary Cathedral High School.

They came representing residences in 29 states. We used Google map from doorstep of St. Mary’s at 615 Hoyt Street to the address listed in our master roster. So this distance is not as the “crow flies.”

Richard & Leslie Mikulich – Class of 1966 from Santa Rosa, CA 2439 miles! Rich and Leslie received a bottle of champagne. And close runner up was Howard Korth – Class of 1937 from Piedmont, CA 2415 miles!

Louise Becker LaVere – class of 1933 was the oldest attendee. Louise also received a bottle of champagne again a close second was Howard Korth – class of 1937

The most graduates attending from a Class were 26 from the Class of 1968.

Liturgy at the Cathedral - August 9, 2008

The reunion began with a liturgy at the Cathedral. Bishop Carlson presided. As the liturgy began, I thought about the many times we celebrated Mass together when we attended St. Mary High School and how so many of us found classmates to sit with at this liturgy - the bonds that began so many years ago were so evident last night.

The picture above was taken from the balcony at Communion. I realized how many decades of classes these people represented - all joining together to thank God for the blessings we have had in our lives; including the experiences we had at a great school with good teachers.

It was a good way to begin our 2nd St. Mary High School All Class Reunion.

TONIGHT!

The long anticipated event is now just hours away. This will be such fun - to see so many friends in one room at one time. The reunion committee has worked so hard to make this event a memorable one. Thank you so much for all of your dedication and commitment to plan such a fantastic night.
