Athletic Association - 1981

I remember in the 70's going to the bingo's with my Mom. I even won $200 one time! The workers were a group of very dedicated parishioners. A few of them are in the picture above (I assume my brother Jim took this picture because he was always working the bingos!)

The main Corridor of St. Mary High School in 1924 was bright with sunshine. In the late 60's the area that brought in all that sunshine was remodeled into the school library.

Demolition of St. Mary Cathedral High School - 2008

I watched Bierlein Construction Crew begin to tear down our school building this afternoon. I stood with Fr. James Wm. Bessert, the current Rector of the Cathedral, watching the crane struggle with the job. Fr. Bessert mentioned that the crew told him this morning that the building was so well constructed that it would take most of the week to complete the job. The diocese also will put aside a limited number of bricks from the demolition to make available to St. Mary Cathedral School alumni.

I have mixed emotions about the demolition. I know the building had to be torn down but as I watched the crane tear down Sr. Roberta's classroom and the fact that my Mom, Elinor Shea, was the secretary in the grade school the last 20+ years it was in existence, I realized how much the building meant to me.

The building, strong and true, is a true comparison of how I think of the alumni of St. Mary Cathedral High School and all the people that made it possible fo us to attend. We can thank our parents and grandparents for their support and dedication and we can thank the good sisters and priests and wonderfully dedicated lay people that cared so much about us and our faith that they worked for years making St. Mary's a great school.

So even though our school building is being demolished this week, each and every one of us holds the spirit of that school within us. WE ARE ST. MARY'S.

Hoyt Street in 1878

Above is Hoyt Street in 1878 - At left is the second Church (1863); center is the Rectory (1874); and right is St. Mary's Academy (1878).

In 1878 the Catholics of the parish were burdened with the debt of St. Mary's Hospital which Fr. van der Bom founded in 1874 so they could not afford to build a new school. The original church building which had housed the school was too old to continue using it. So at the expense of the Sisters of Providence of St. Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana a new school was built.

Class Log - 1954 and Missal Club Minutes - 1957

Steno Notebook class minutes 1954-55 - (6th grade)

The meeting was started at 2:05 p.m. on Dec. 7, 1954, with a Hail Mary by Sister Eileen Marie. Suggestions were made to improve the classroom they were made by Steve S., James K., JoAnn C., Mike E., Mike D., Galord D., Suzzette C., J. Morrison, Kenneth B., Lynn-Ann W., Tom M., Karyl P. and Sister Eileen Marie.

A move was made to have dues but then someone suggested that the people who talk must pay two cents. Half of it would be for the room and the other half for the pagan babies. Sister said she would think about it.

We are to have a Christmas Party in which there will be two plays. The characters were told and the actors chosen. The meeting ended at 2:24 with a Hail Mary by Sister Eileen Marie.

Steno Book minutes of Missal Club - 1957-58 (9th grade)

The last meeting of the Missal Club was held on October 11, at 9:07 a.m. Mary Ann Snyder presiding. The meeting was opened with a prayer. The first order of business was the treasurer's report. She stated that she had no time to compile the accounts, as she had been collecting dues before the meeting.

Next the Confetior, Gospel and Epistle were read and explained by the following: Gloria Butt, Pat O'Donnel, Karyl Pierce, Jim Shea, Bob Herm, Suzette Cutliff, Terry Connelly, Mary Shinners and Susan Block.

The meeting was about to be closed when the treasurer said that she had compiled the dues. In the treasury there is $1.46. And there were no expenditures and that only two classmates had not paid their dues. The meeting was closed with a prayer at 9:28. Jim Shea

Fr. Francis van der Bom - first resident pastor of St. Mary's

At the age of 31, Fr. Francis van der Bom, was sent to St. Mary's East Saginaw on September 30, 1866 to be the first resident pastor. For 23 years, this zealous priest labored in the East Saginaw parish. His achievements were many: making an addition to the school, building the Rectory, aiding in the establishment of St. Mary's Hospital and St. Vincent's Orphans Home and founding Calvary Cemetery.

In recognition of his "outstanding contributions to the welfare of the citizens of Saginaw without distinction as to race, color or creed," Father van der Bom was elected to the Saginaw Hall of Fame on May 30, 1966. One of a select number of 14 outstanding Saginawians to win the honor, Father van der Bom became the first clergyman so designated.

Prom Rules - 1962

The following regulations will be enforced for the Junior-Senior Prom which will be held at the Y.M.C.A. on Wednesday, May 23.

1. No one who has taken an alcoholic drink that evening will be admitted to the prom.
2. There will be no Pre-prom or Post-prom parties to be held that evening.
3. Immodest dress is strictly prohibited for the banquet and prom. Strapless formals are prohibited. Low necklines are immodest. Spaghetti straps are forbidden.
4. The banquet will be held at 6:15. It is for the juniors and seniors, faculty and pastors. The parents are invited to the program (about 7:15)
5. The prom will be held from 9:00 to 12:30.
6. Smoking will not be permitted in any part of the Y.M.C.A. building at any time. Smoking will be allowed just outside the exit doors.
7. Once admitted to the prom, no one who has gone away from the building may return.
8. By direction of the Most Reverend Bishop all students must be home by 2:00 a.m. of Thursday, May 24.
9. All students are expected to be in school at 12:40 on Thursday, May 24. It would be very edifying to seem them at the 11:30 school Mass.
10. Since admission to the prom will be by personalized tickets only it will be necessary that the names of all dates be submitted by May 4, Friday.
Parents of juniors and seniors will be admitted without tickets.
11. If you are inviting an outsider as your date, please inform them of the rules.

Dear Parents, we ask for your wholehearted cooperation to make this banquet and prom a success for your son or daughter. With your help it can be an event of happy memories rather than one filled with regrets.

In a report for the end of the year:

....The first combination festival and ice cream social sponsored by both fathers and mothers of the first four grades made a net profit of $325.00. It is interesting to note that this is the first project in Home and School in which husbands and wives participated together, and also the first project with included the entire family. From all reports a good time was had by all and this will undoubtedly become an annual event.

Without room mothers, Home and School could not function. We need and appreciate their help. The job of a room mother could, however, be made easier if more parents, both husbands and wives, would participate and offer their services. The President hopes to start the year with a questionnaire to be sent to all parents asking in which way you can offer your services. Getting acquainted with the parents of your children's classmates will prove beneficial to all. We invite you to join in all the activities and hope to see you next Fall.
